Program for October 12, 2019 First Baptist Church
Videorecording of this concert

Commando March (1943) Samuel Barber (1910–1981)), ed. R. Anderson Collinsworth
Barber was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II, and he wrote
Commando March referring to it as “war music.”

Clair de Lune (1905) Claude Debussy (1862–1918), arr. Tom Wallace
Initially a work for solo piano, no. 3 from Suite Bergamasque is on the
program in honor of the 50 th anniversary of the first moon landing, which
was on July 20, 1969.

Mannin Veen (1933) Haydn Wood (1882–1959), ed. Tyler Lawing
The title translates as “Dear Isle of Man,” and the selection is based on four
Manx folk songs: The Good Old Way, The Manx Fiddler, Sweet Water in
the Common, and The Harvest of the Sea.

In Bugdom (1908) Paul Eno (1869–1924), arr. R. E. Hildreth, ed. Ralph Geiger
Eno, a ragtime orchestra leader from Philadelphia, wrote several pieces for
band, and also solo banjo. In Bugdom is subtitled “An Insect Escapade,”
and it is based on Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.

Songs of Old Kentucky (2006) Brant Karrick (1960)
I. John Riley (with Wayfaring Stranger)
II. Barn Dance (Sourwood Mountain, Frog Went a-Courtin, Loving Hannah)
Most of the songs included were collected during the early 20th century in
the Cumberland Mountains by Josephine McGill or Loraine Wyman.

Mountainscape (2012) Steve Danyew (1983)
Mountainscape was inspired by Isaiah 55:12: “For ye shall go out with joy,
and be led forth in peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth
before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”

Rally Round the Flag (1862) George Frederick Root (1820–1895), arr. R. E. Hildreth, ed. John Stroube
Alternately known as The Battle Cry of Freedom, the song from the war
between the state endures in this 1917 arrangement for band.

Rhosymedre is #2 of Vaughan Williams’ Three Preludes for Organ.

The Melody Shop (1910) Karl King (1891–1971), arr. Andrew Glover
One of Karl King’s best, this circus march contains a memorable euphonium part.
